How to make the Internet a safe place for children and adolescents

The Internet provides us with important opportunities to educate, create, and innovate, and it's important that we all actively participate to ensure safe use. Being more informed and educated about the online world can even teach us how to identify risks a person may face.

For proper use, people must be aware that the Internet has many advantages, as well as many disadvantages. It starts with you, your family, and friends becoming more informed and educated about the online world, and you can prevent the risks you may face.

Responsible use of the Internet

If you are a mother, father, or guardian, talk to your daughters or sons about the importance of responsible use of the Internet and the various social networks available today.

Today, people grow up with technology in various aspects of their lives, and online activities are an integral part of the realities of millions of girls, boys, adolescents, and young people around the world, as well as the responsibility adults have toward them.

The Internet and its use by girls, boys and adolescents

When using this digital tool, we must prioritize children, adolescents, and young adults, as they are the most vulnerable when they come into contact with this technological medium, as well as with social media.

Because it's not just about having access to the Internet, but also about using it correctly. According to the DQ Institute, in 2020, 60% of children aged 8 to 12 in 30 countries are currently exposed to cyber risks.

Follow these recommendations to guide children and adolescents

Follow these recommendations if you are a parent or caregiver and want to encourage good internet use:

  • Be a good example when surfing the Internet.
  • Talk openly with children, adolescents, and young adults about the potential risks that exist on the Internet.
  • Help them surf the Internet and learn about their favorite sites and social networks.
  • Show them how to respect others when using the Internet.

The rights and responsibilities that people have offline are the same as those shared online. Similarly, when we talk about a safe internet, we refer to the possibility of browsing responsibly, critically, and positively.
